The Pearls Came Back

fashion your style Aug 12, 2026

The other day I found myself standing in front of my jewellery box looking at a strand of pearls I hadn't worn in years. Not because I didn't love them. I did. I just quietly decided somewhere along the way that pearls made me look... well... older.

Isn't it funny how we do that?

We don't even remember making the decision. One day we simply stop reaching for something we once loved.

For me, it was pearls.

Then, a few months ago, something shifted. I started noticing women wearing pearls in a completely different way. Not with matching suits and sensible pumps, but with white shirts, denim jackets, linen dresses and even T-shirts.

They looked fresh. Relaxed. Confident. It wasn't the pearls that had changed. It was the way they were being worn. And perhaps the way I was seeing them.

Around the same time, I came across a heart-shaped locket by Monica Vinader. The moment I saw it, I smiled. It wasn't because I needed another piece of jewellery. But this little locket felt different.I didn't want to wear it on a chain by itself. I wanted to hang it from my pearls.

That thought surprised me.

Why?

Because for years I would have assumed the pearls were "finished." They were what they were. Instead, I found myself thinking, What if they simply need another chapter?

That little thought has stayed with me. The older I get, the more I realize that's true of us too. We spend so much of our lives thinking growth means becoming someone different.

A new hairstyle.
A new wardrobe.
A new career.
A new beginning.

Sometimes it does. But sometimes growth is much quieter than that. Sometimes it's simply adding something new to a life that's already rich with meaning.

Those pearls have been with me for decades. They've seen celebrations and heartbreak. Television appearances and grocery store runs. Special occasions and completely ordinary Tuesdays.

They've travelled through different seasons of my life without asking me to become someone else.

Now there's a little heart-shaped locket hanging among them. Not replacing the pearls. Simply joining them. And somehow, that feels like the perfect metaphor for this season of my life.

I'm not trying to erase the woman I was. I'm not trying to become twenty-five again. Heavens, no. I'm simply adding another chapter. Another experience. Another lesson. Another reason to be grateful.

I've been thinking a lot lately about getting older.

Actually... no. That's not quite true. I've been thinking about growing wiser. I think there's a difference.

When we're younger, we often believe life is about collecting more. More success. More approval. More things. These days, I'm much more interested in collecting meaning. And maybe that's why the pearls found their way back into my life. They aren't a symbol of getting older.

They're a reminder that some things become more beautiful because they've stood the test of time.

Friendships.
Marriages.
Family traditions.
A favourite leather chair.
A well-loved cookbook with splashes on the pages.
A face that has smiled enough to leave little lines around the eyes.

Maybe pearls belong on that list too. As I fastened them around my neck the other morning, I caught my reflection in the mirror. I stood there for a moment. Then I smiled. It wasn't because I thought I looked younger. It wasn't because I thought I looked fashionable. It was because, for the first time in a very long time, the woman looking back at me and the woman I feel like inside were finally having the same conversation.

The pearls hadn't changed.

I had.

And somehow, that made all the difference.
