The Style of Living
Jun 01, 2026
For most of my career, I've talked about style. Style as clothing, colors and wardrobes. I'm passionate about the power of appearance and self-expression, and while I still firmly believe those things matter, I've come to realize that style is much bigger than what hangs in our closets.
Style is how we live.
In fact, I think the most stylish women I know have very little in common when it comes to fashion. One may wear designer clothing while another shops at consignment stores. One may live in a sprawling home while another has intentionally downsized. One may travel the world while another is happiest tending her garden.
What they have in common isn't what they wear or what they own. It's how they move through the world. They know who they are. They make choices that reflect what matters to them. Their lives feel intentional.
And that, to me, is stylish living. I don't think stylish living has much to do with perfection. Or trends. Or appearances. I think stylish living is the art of creating a life that fits. A life that reflects your values, your priorities, and the woman you are becoming.
A stylish home isn't necessarily a large home. Sometimes it's a small home that gives you more freedom. Years ago, Scottie and I downsized. Our home is tiny by many standards, but it's easy to care for, close to the river, and perfectly suited to this chapter of our lives. These days, that feels luxurious.
A stylish wardrobe isn't necessarily a large wardrobe either. It's one that makes your life easier. One that helps you get dressed with confidence and move through your day feeling like yourself.
And a stylish schedule? That may be the most overlooked style choice of all. For years, many of us wore busyness like a badge of honour. We filled every square on the calendar and measured our worth by our productivity. But I've come to appreciate something different.
A stylish schedule has breathing room. It leaves space for a walk by the river. A long lunch with a friend. An afternoon with a good book. A spontaneous adventure. A quiet moment to simply be.
As I've gotten older, I've become less interested in accumulating things and more interested in collecting moments.
A conversation that lingers. Fresh flowers on the kitchen table. A grandchild's phone call.
Coffee on the patio. Laughter around a dinner table. The simple pleasures that make a life feel rich.
Stylish living isn't about having a beautiful life. It's about living beautifully. Because there's a difference. One is appearance. The other is experience. And while appearance can certainly bring us pleasure, experience is what stays with us. The truth is, we are all styling our lives every day.
We style our homes.
We style our schedules.
We style our relationships.
We style the way we spend our time, our energy, and our attention.
The question isn't whether you're styling your life. The question is whether you're doing it intentionally. Are you living according to your values? Are you spending your time on what matters most? Are you creating a life that reflects who you are today?
Not who you used to be.
Not who someone else expects you to be.
You.
Because stylish living isn't about impressing people. It's about expressing yourself. It's about creating a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
It's choosing quality over quantity.
Meaning over momentum.
Presence over perfection.
And perhaps that's why I love this idea so much.
It reminds us that style isn't something reserved for our closets. It's something available to us every single day. In the choices we make. In the moments we notice. In the life we create.
A stylish life isn't measured by what you own. It's measured by how fully you live. And that, to me, is always in style.
