If Nature Approves It, I Do Too
Mar 04, 2026
Some style rules deserve to be broken - especially the ones that make no sense in the first place.
Everybody seems to be talking about color right now.
“I’m a Spring.”
“I’m a Summer.”
“I’m a… honestly, I don’t know what I am.”
And while color systems can be helpful, today I want to talk about something much simpler — and far more intuitive.
Blue.
Blue is everywhere this year, and it makes me happy. It has always been my favorite color. And that old saying — “Blue and green should never be seen, except. in the washing machine” — might be one of the silliest style rules we’ve been handed down.
(Along with several others invented, I suspect, by people who hated joy.)
Because blue and green are the most natural color combination there is.
Look around.
Sky and trees.
Ocean and land.
Water meeting mossy stone.
If you’re ever wondering whether two colors go together, here’s a rule I’ve trusted for decades:
If you see it in nature, it’s a yes.
There’s a reason we don’t feel stressed staring at a clear blue sky or a calm ocean. Blue has been scientifically shown to lower heart rate and promote calm — a lovely fringe benefit when you’re facing a mounting to-do list or a noisy world.
In my decades of helping women find their personal style, I’ve noticed something interesting: blue is the one color almost everyone feels comfortable wearing.
It doesn’t demand attention the way bright red or neon orange can. Instead, it offers a quiet, naturally polished confidence. It feels grounded. Trustworthy. Put-together without trying too hard.
Paired with green, it becomes even more powerful — soothing, fresh, alive.
Here’s the good news: blue is a universal flatterer.
Everyone looks good in blue.
The secret to choosing your best blue is getting the right temperature, intensity, and undertone so it harmonizes with you.
-
Cool undertones
If you have hints of pink or blue in your skin, look for blues with a crisp, clean feel.
Best shades: cobalt, royal blue, navy, true ice blue. -
Warm undertones
If your skin carries gold or peach tones, choose blues with a hint of yellow in the mix.
Best shades: teal, turquoise, aqua, petrol blue. -
Neutral undertones
If you fall somewhere in the middle you have the most flexibility.
Best shades: periwinkle, cornflower blue, medium denim.
And then there’s my personal rule: If it’s blue - any shade - it’s probably the right choice. Blue is best.
Blue manages to look elevated and expensive without ever feeling boring. It’s calming without being dull. Confident without being loud.
And in a season where so many of us are craving color, grounding, and ease — blue (especially with green) might be the most beautiful place to begin.
